A. B. DeHaan graduated from Grinnell College in 1906 and went on to Oberlin Theological Seminary to obtain his B.D. in 1909. He then went to China to teach in Shandong. After seeing programs such as Yale-in-China, DeHaan approached Grinnell about setting up Grinnell-in-China. He was instrumental in recruiting such teachers as Alice Reed to the program.
