Joseph Milner was born on April 11, 1890, in Kansas City, Missouri. He taught at West China Union University for one year following his graduation from Wesleyan University in 1916. From 1917 until 1918, he served as Quartermaster 1st of the United States Naval Reserve Force. From 1919 until 1920, he collected antiques in China. After this, he settled into the real estate business in New York until his death in 1972.
