Irving Wood was born in Walton, New York, in 1861. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College in 1885, Wood spent four years teaching at Jaffna College in Ceylon. Upon his return to the US, he entered the Bachelor of Divinity program at Yale University. In 1892, the same year that he completed his Yale degree, Wood married Katherine Hastings. He then taught at the University of Chicago for a year before coming to Smith College in 1893 as a professor of Biblical literature and comparative religion, a position he held until his retirement in 1929. The Woods had two daughters, Constance and Edna, both of whom completed degrees at Smith. Wood received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1903 and his D.D. from Hamilton College in 1915. In 1924-1925, Wood took a leave of absence from Smith, during which he served as a visiting professor at Ginling College in Nanking (having long been a member of Ginling's Board of Founders) and at the Doshisha University of Japan. In 1930, he returned to China to visit his daughter, Edna (who was serving as a missionary), and during his stay he was a guest lecturer at Ginling. He died in Washington, DC, in 1934.
