John Forrest Chapman was an Iowa native and graduated from Grinnell College in 1924. He majored in History and English and sought a career in journalism. Realizing that world experience would help him reach this goal, he accepted a two-year contract to teach at Grinnell-in-China. He traveled extensively when not teaching and at the end of his contract taught for a year at Grinnell-in-Greece. When he returned to the United States he studied journalism at Columbia University and in 1937 married Eleanor Howland. He became the foreign editor of Business Week magazine, a vice-president of McGraw-Hill International, and executive editor of The Harvard Business Review. He also oversaw the creation of McGraw-Hill World News. Chapman received honorary degrees from Grinnell and Emerson Colleges and died in 1991 of a heart failure at the age of 88.
