The ABCFM was organized in 1810 by Congregationalists. Other denominations were part of the Board for varying periods of time: Presbyterian (1812‑57), Dutch Reformed (1826‑57), German Reformed (1839‑66). By 1913 the ABCFM was closely aligned with the Congregationalists. Material from the three regional societies of Congregational woman's work is included here due to their support of the work of the American Board. These societies, the Woman's Board of Missions, Boston, the Woman's Board of Missions of the Interior, and the Woman's Board of Missions of the Pacific, united with the ABCFM in 1927.

The ABCFM merged with three other organizations in 1961 to form the United Church Board for World Ministries (see HR1001).
