by Patricia Stark

Born in Philadelphia in 1882 and educated in the United States, John McGregor Gibb spent more than half his life in China. After graduating from Wesleyan in 1904, he went to China to teach chemistry at Peking University. In this same year, fellow classmate and Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother, George Merriam Newell left for China as well. In 1905, Gibb married Kate Chandlin of Tientsin, China. They had six children: John McGregor III (b. 1906), Alice (b.1908), Thomas Candlin (b.1910), Edmund C. (b.1913), Leonora (b.1916), Anne (b.1918). Aside from two breaks in 1910-1912 and 1919-1920 to study and teach chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, Gibb remained at Peking University until 1927. During his last six years there, Gibb was in charge of the construction bureau for building the complete plant for the University.

In 1929, Gibb became a member of the Kemmerer Financial Mission to China, and shortly thereafter become the Chief Inspectorate of Salt Revenue within the Accounts Department of the Chinese Government in 1930. McGregor was also a partner in the firm of D.S. Wylie and Co., general importers, based out of Shanghai. Gibb authored and translated into Chinese numerous chemistry textbooks. He died in Pei Tai Ho China, in 1939.
