Sarah Luella Miner was born in Oberlin, Ohio, on October 30, 1861. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College in 1884 and was elected to membership in the Oberlin Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Miner received the degree of Master of Arts from Oberlin in 1897 and the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters in 1914.
For several years after her graduation from Oberlin Miner served as a teacher at Fisk University in Tennessee. In 1887 she received an appointment from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions for service in China. From 1888 to 1890 she taught at Luho Academy for boys in Tungchow (now Tongzhou), and from 1890 to 1902 at North China Union College for men at Tungchow, near Peking (Beijing). From 1903 to 1913 she was principal of the Bridgman Academy for girls in Peking.
In 1905 Miner founded China's first college for women, the North China Union College for Women, which later became part of Yenching University. She served as president of the college until 1920, and from 1920 to 1922 as dean. In 1923 she accepted appointment as Professor of Religious Education in the School of Theology of Shantung Christian University, and served as Dean of Women of Shantung Christian University. Miner retired in 1933 and died in Tsinan (now Jinan), Shandong province in 1936.
Miner was one of the heroines of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, and later wrote a book entitled Two Heroes of Cathay, dealing with the experience of two young Chinese Christian men during the Boxer uprising. She was also the author of several other books and numerous articles. Miner Hall at the Yenching University Women's College was named after Luella Miner.
